The North Dakota Department of Commerce announced today that a total of $1,378,882.60 of Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds for fiscal year 2023 were awarded to two North Dakota Communities.
The CDBG program provides financial assistance to eligible units of local governments in the form of grants for public facilities, public services, housing rehabilitation, and economic development projects. The primary beneficiaries of CDBG-funded projects must be low to moderate income individuals.
“We are excited to see the positive impact of the CDBG funds for fiscal year 2023,” Commerce Community Development Director Maria Effertz said. “These funds will contribute to essential community projects in Hazelton and Wishek, ensuring the overall well-being of these North Dakota communities.”
FY2023 CDBG award recipients:
- The City of Hazelton secured $1,235,882.60 for essential sewer upgrades, crucial for its central role with a high school and local businesses. The current system has offset joints, leaks, cracks, root intrusion, and sags, posing health risks. The proposed rehabilitation is a fiscally responsible solution, minimizing street disruptions, and ensuring a design life of over 50 years.
- The City of Wishek secured $170,000 to tackle critical fire hydrant issues – age, inoperability, difficulty in opening, leaks, and unreliability. This funding will replace around 10 hydrants and install 10 new gate valves, resulting in improved fire suppression, better flushing, and overall enhanced fire protection for the Wishek community.
