WalkWise began with a personal mission. Founder and CEO Peter Chamberlain, a North Dakota entrepreneur, sought to solve a problem close to his heart. As one of 12 grandchildren, Peter often worried about his grandmothers—Ann, Myrla, and Kathleen—living independently or in assisted living across the country. After Kathleen’s fall when she wasn’t using her walker, Peter realized something needed to change.
Inspired by smartwatches, he had a light-bulb moment: his grandparents wouldn’t wear smartwatches, but they always used their walkers. By tracking walker use, Peter could provide families with vital fitness data and ensure their loved ones stayed safe and active.
What started as a fitness tracker quickly became a powerful tool. WalkWise introduced notifications for inactivity, tipped walkers, and irregular usage patterns, helping address health risks like falls and urinary tract infections. By encouraging walker use, the device fostered independence and reduced risks.
With support from the North Dakota Development Fund, WalkWise transformed its vision into reality. The funding fueled research, product enhancements, and growth. Today, WalkWise boasts:
A presence in 14 states, with care providers nationwide leveraging its tools.
Two issued utility patents and trademarks, underscoring its innovation.
An expanded product line, including devices for wheelchairs and canes.
The development of a cutting-edge Cellular Communication Node, ensuring seamless connectivity.
The results have been profound, with organizations reporting a ~40% reduction in fall rates. WalkWise’s technology is transforming lives, offering peace of mind to families and empowering seniors to live safely and independently.
